Far less colorful and vibrant than previous projects with the Boston-based brand, the recently-teased sneakers seemingly take inspiration from the late 1990s – specifically a cover of XXL from June 1999. While reminiscent of the readily-available “Black/White/Grey” NB 990v4 that first launched in 2016, Joe Freshgoods’ next sneaker collaboration is different. For starters, the upcoming New Balance duo feature a tonal sole unit. Furthermore, the mesh base layer appears to enjoy a different layout than standard versions of the shoe. Traditional “990” numerals on the lateral heel are also replaced with “JFG” text, further cementing Joseph Robinson in the annals of New Balance partners. Other details discernible from early and obscure looks at the pairs include patent leather panels along the similar (at least on the mostly-black option), co-branding on the sockliners, and contrast “N” logos on the sides.
