Nike’s “Familia” offerings have appeared throughout the last month, welcoming Hispanic Heritage Month in style. As the month-long celebration comes to a close, more sneakers continue to surface with familial themes and nods to Día de Muertos.
The Day of the Dead holiday is observed in much of the Spanish-speaking world between November 1st and 2nd. People commemorate their loved ones who’ve transitioned with ornate altars featuring their pictures, favorite foods, and other items. Nike’s Día de Muertos collection already includes an Wide Fit Pointed Toe Over The Knee Boots, Sneakers Elton B4BKM0221 Nero, and Dunk Low, with a Blazer Mid ’77 Schnürschuhe CALVIN KLEIN JEANS Lug Mid Laceup Boot Hike YM0YM00270 Perfect Taupe A03.
The commemorative take on the brand’s first basketball sneaker favors an understated color palette perhaps as a way to capture the event’s more somber side. White-colored leather features a faded gold application across most of the upper; profile swooshes and upper spine underlays take on black finishes also contrasted with gold dust. The two-tone arrangement takes on the Nike Blazer‘s shoe box, marking the special occasion. Lateral heels forgo the hummingbird embroidered on other Día de Muertos sneakers in favor of a golden crescent, ostensibly the moon. Underfoot, sole units opt for a light gum brown look that complements the top-half well.
