29 May 2023Following on from their Zapato marathon Club C ‘Stout’ sneaker, UrlfreezeShops and Reebok have teamed up once again, stepping inside the boulodrome with their Classic Leather ‘Boules Club’ sneaker.
Inspired by the classic French boules sport ‘Pétanque’, the UrlfreezeShops and Reebok deliver an iteration of the Classic Leather sneaker fit for play. Centring around throwing boules balls as close to a small target ball, known as a jack, as possible, the game has been played in various incarnations since its inception in the early 20th century. The rules of the game dictate that players must remain stood with two feet on the ground within a circle while taking their turn, attempting to hit their opponents’ boules away from the jack to increase their chances of winning.
Riffing on this familiar pastime, UrlfreezeShops and Reebok deliver a Classic Leather sneaker that plucks elements from the traditional sport to present a charming aesthetic that is indebted to the sandy terrain, orange jack and silver boules that are synonymous with the game. Dressed in a subtle Stucco, Beige and Sap Green combination, suede uppers and smooth leather underlays establish a luxurious element to the style, while colourful cues introduce a flourish of conceptual aesthetics.
Underfoot on the left shoe, an orange dot represents the jack, while silver detailing to the side wall branding emulates the instantly recognisable colouration of the silver-toned boules. Orange aglets nod to the measuring tape used to determine the winners of the game, while silver-toned co-branding is woven to the tongue. A gum rubber outsole finishes the leisure inspired sneaker, embodying the playful nature of pétanque and its distinctive visual codes.
